What to Collect for a Model
Before you build a model, gather a few things about the process. The clearer this is, the faster the model comes together and the more you can trust the results.
Start with the goal
Section titled “Start with the goal”- What questions must the model answer?
- What would a great outcome look like?
Map the flow
Section titled “Map the flow”For each type of item that moves through the process (each product, order, or customer type), capture:
- The path it takes, including every place it goes.
- Where the path splits, the percentage that takes each option, and what decides it.
List the resources
Section titled “List the resources”- The type of resource each step needs, such as people or equipment.
- How many of each, and their hours of operation.
Capture the times
Section titled “Capture the times”- The processing time at each step, by item type, counting working time only, not waiting. Real start and finish times are best; estimates are fine to begin with.
- What makes times vary, and any unscheduled downtime.
Bring the arrivals and validation data
Section titled “Bring the arrivals and validation data”- When items arrived over a recent period, and their type or characteristics.
- Any existing record of times in and out, so you can check the model against reality.

Almost all models require the same basic information. The information below is an outline to help you know what to collect for model building. In addition, some models may require customized questions. We are happy to help you if you have questions.
The following information is needed:
- What are the questions you must answer?
- What would be a project “Home Run”?
- Flow for each “type” of product:
- A flowchart is needed for each type of product separately (one flow for each type).
- The flow should include all the places to which a product travels.
- If there are options, then the percent of each option.
- What causes different flows at each station.
- Resources:
- Identify the “type of resource” needed for each product type at each step.
- Record the quantity of each type of resource and hours of operation.
- How much of each resource is available for this process?
- Capture processing times at each step by “type of Product” (Only work time. Do not include the waiting time). Raw data would be best (start time and finish time would be best) but we can work with estimations as a model starting point.
- What causes different times at each station.
- Unscheduled downtime at each work area (Equipment).
- Capture product scheduled start time and “Type of product” for the past year. If you have codes that describe the product characteristics, please document.
- To verify modeling. Do you have current database of time in and out of processing? What information is available?
