Single Resource Optimizer

When you need to quickly map the resource level of any resource in a model. To optimize resource level to meet performance requirements. To see the effect of resource levels on key performance indicators, or to model many different shifts of the same type of resource with a single resource changing quantities each half hour.

Where to Find the Model Object

The following model object can be found in the model objects directory:

  • Resources \ Single Resource Optimizer

Difficulty Level

  • Ease of Use: Easy
  • Ease of Modification: Moderate

How to Use the Model Object

  1. Open Your Model: Open your model or create a new blank model.
  2. Insert the Model Object into Your Model
    1. Locate the model object Single Resource Optimizer and select the insert button.
    2. Move the cursor to the point of insertion and left mouse-click. The upper left corner of the model object will be inserted at the location of the mouse-click.
  3. Define Values: Define the values for scenario parameters s_Name_Res1, s_Name_Res1, s_####Res1, and s_ReportsEveryHour based on the information provided under the heading Scenario Parameters below. The values for these Scenario Parameters must be provided before the simulation start.

If you add the model object multiple times, for multiple resources then you need to update all the scenario parameters for other resources as well, like; s_Name_Res#, s_Name_Res#, and s_####Res#.define scenarios for Single Resource Optimizer

  4. Review Output Report
    1. Simulate the model.simulate model in Calculate Elapsed Time
    2. Open the Output Report for information on v_Needed_Res1 and v_Util_Res1 variable.output report in Single Resource Optimizer
    3. Export the variable data by clicking the second Excel icon that will Export Variable Report to Excel.export variable data in Calculate Elapsed Time
      1. Choose the location where you would like the Excel file to be saved.
      2. Choose the variables you would like to export and click OK. Goto the location chosen at step 4.3.1 and open the  Excel file.export variables in Single Resource Optimizer The reason for using Output Report for exporting variable data is that ir can export more than one million rows of data (Excel limitation), while Output Detailed Report can only export upto 16,382 rows.
    4. Open the Output Detailed Report, click the Generate a time series plot icon, add v_Needed_Res1 or v_Util_Res1 to Selected Values and then click OK.create time series plot in Single Resource Optimizer
    5. To optimize the number of resources, set the half hourly quantities higher than needed and run the model again. Review the time series graph for v_Needed_Res#.
  5. Completion: The model object is now integrated into your model, you should now be able to save and then simulate the model.

Controls Usage

Attributes:

  1. a_Acuity: Do not change. Used in Arrival MO and Triage MO.
  2. a_Rand: Do not change. Used in Arrival MO.

Variables:

  1. v_ReportsEveryHour: Do not change. Uses the value from the scenario parameter of the same name to turn on or of reporting every hour.
  2. v_Pool_Res1 Used: Do not change. To define the pool of resources available during any hour of the day. This is set in the Set Pool activity.
  3. v_Util_Res1 Reports: Do not change. The hourly utilization for each type of resource.
  4. v_Needed_Res1: Do not change. Reports the number of resources needed during each hour of the day.

Scenario Parameters:

  1. s_Numb_Res1: User input required. Defines the maximum possible number of resources the resource to be optimized.
  2. s_Name_Res1: User input required. Defines the name of the resource to be used in the logic. Copy the name of the resource from the resource dialog box (i.e. Nurse or MD).
  3. s_030Res1 to s_2400: User input required. These are 48 scenario parameters to define the number of resources during each half hour of the day.
  4. s_ReportsEveryHour: User input required. Defines if reports are “ON” (m_On) or “OFF” (m_Off). If reports are on, a report will be captured every hour. This makes it possible to retrieve information about hourly utilization and number of resources needed per hour.

IF s_ReportsEveryHour is set to “m_On” AND s_Numb_Res1 higher 50% higher than maximum need AND hourly resources s_030Res1 to s_2400 are all set to the maximum needed for the 24 hour period AND replications are set to 30 THEN the output detail Variables report will show the quantity of resources needed for each hour of the day. This will assist in meeting the response time metrics required by the affordable care act.
