“So You Think You’re A Modeling Guru?”

Challenge - October 2005

In the model “2 Lines Process with 1 Worker” there are two lines of incoming entities. Since there is only 1 worker who has to work both lines, there is an inherent risk of bottlenecks as shown in the model. A waiting cost has been assigned to each entity representing the additional cost of non-value added time in the process. Theoretically, the worker should be able to handle all the incoming entities with in just 6 hours of his 8 hour shift. But the way the model is designed, you will see that entities end up waiting in the activity input queues. Here are your objectives with this exercise:

  • Minimize entity cost without changing the resource’s hourly rate
  • Minimize the entity waiting time (non-value added time)
  • Maximize throughput

Here are a few rules you must follow as you try your experiments:

  • You cannot change the quantity of entities entering the system
  • You cannot change the number of resources
  • You cannot change which activities the resource works on
  • You cannot change the processing times in the activities or routes
  • You cannot change the resource cost
  • You cannot change the entity waiting cost

Get started by downloading the model package.

Complete the challenge and then email your results to technical support. Entries must be received by no later than October 25, 2005 to eligible for the prize.

Each correct entry will be entered for a $50 gift certificate for your favorite national restaurant chain.

Have fun and good luck. Your waist-line could be impacted by how well you do.
